What links the Fiat factory in Turin, the protected island of Tegel lake in Berlin and the former Copenhagen military base? These three remarkable democratic attempts of communication, education and self-government emerged in the last century, based on genuine democratic principles that make them still relevant today.
To develop and consolidate democratic structures is a slow and long process, which can take decades for the society to learn. It requires consensus and continuous effort. The systematic elimination of democratic conditions, on the other hand, can be done quite quickly, over just a few years. By presenting three artistic positions approaching three social experiments, the exhibition focuses on the process of democratic construction. Have there been ideas and practices in the past that might be worth rethinking? Can the experience of the past practice give new impulses for
the future?
Inspired by Esperanto, a language that is independent of any nation, ensuring equal rights for all in the use of language, Giulia Bruno examines in her work one of the most promising linguistic experiments of the 19th and 20th century. Reconstructing the history of the Schulfarm Insel Scharfen- berg, which was founded as an important reform pedagogical experiment of the Weimar Republic, Zsolt Vásárhelyi and Kati Simon capture impressions on building democratic society through education. In her scripted video work, Nicoline van Harskamp addresses issues of freedom and consensus democracy, by examining the independent society of Christiania, a free town in the centre of Copenhagen.

Inspired by Esperanto, a language that is independent of any nation, ensuring equal rights for all in the use of language, Giulia Bruno examines in her work one of the most promising linguistic experiments of the 19th and 20th century. By combining film, photography, documentation and interviews, the project depicts the connections between language, nation, identity, globalisation and economy. Shot in Jamaica, the US, Indonesia, Europe, Brazil and South-Korea, the film investigates the role of the “lingua franca”, the artificial transmitting language. In particular, discourses and practices related to the usage and application of Esperanto are explored, addressing issues such as, the desire for internationality or for building a nation, promoting economical and cultural interests, crossing social boundaries and geopolitical borders.

To Live Outside the Law You Must be Honest

To Live Outside the Law You Must be Honest is part of a three-channel video installation that is comprised of 3 scripted video works, each performed by the same actor in different roles. The main video is recorded in Christiania, a free town in the centre of Copenhagen that was created in the early 1970’s. Under increasing outside pressure, it manages to operate without private ownership and through a system of consensus democracy, up to today. Informed by interviews with Christiania’s residents, the video addresses issues of self-government and self-policing, issues of freedom and participatory democracy.

Die Insel

Schulfarm Insel Scharfenberg, founded as a reform pedagogical experiment in the Weimar Republic, has implemented a radically democratic school concept. In this boarding school, built on an island of the Tegel lake in Berlin, teachers and students held open debates on discussion forums and voted on everything related to the school’s duties even its most basic operational functioning. Everyone had one vote, both students and teachers. Through depicting the history of the school, Die Insel examines what society, politics, the school itself could – or couldn’t – do with this heritage, in the fascistic Germany of the ‘30s, during World War 2 and then in the ‘50s, in ‘68, or in the ‘90s. And what can we do with it today?

Was verbindet die Fiat fabrik in Turin, die Insel des Naturschutzgebietes im Tegeler See in Berlin und das ehemalige Militärgelände in Kopenhagen? Es handelt sich um drei außergewöhnliche Versuche zu Kommunikation, Bildung und Selbstverwaltung aus dem letzten Jahrhundert, die auf echte demokratische Prinzipien gründen und heute noch von Bedeutung sind.
Die Entwicklung und Konsolidierung demokratischer Strukturen ist ein langsamer und langwieriger Prozess, es kann Jahrzehnte dauern bis sich eine Gesellschaft diese angeeignet hat. Es bedarf dazu eines Konsenses und einer fortwährender Anstrengung. Die systematische Beseitigung demokratischer Bedingungen andererseits kann schnell vonstatten gehen, innerhalb von wenigen Jahren. Die Ausstellung setzt den Schwerpunkt auf den Prozess demokratischer Konstrukte, sie zeigt drei künstlerische Positionen, die sich mit drei sozialen Experimenten beschäftigen. Gab es in der Vergangenheit Ideen und Praktiken, die es sich lohnt neu zu denken? Kann die Erfahrung aus der Praxis der Vergangenheit neue Impulse für die Zukunft liefern?
Inspiriert von Esperanto, einer an keinen Staat gebundene Sprache, die gleiche Rechte für alle beim Gebrauch dieser Sprache garantiert, erforscht Giulia Bruno in ihrer Arbeit eines der vielversprechendsten linguistischen Experimente des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Zsolt Vásárhelyi und Kati Simon fangen Eindrücke davon ein, wie eine demokratische Gesellschaft durch Bildung geschaffen wird, sie zeichnen die Geschichte der Schulfarm Insel Scharfenberg nach, gegründet als wichtiges reformpädagogisches Experiment der Weimarer Republik. Nicoline van Harskamp setzt sich mit Themen wie Freiheit und Konsensdemokratie auseinander in ihrer inszenierten Videoarbeit über die unabhängige Gemeinschaft in Christiania, der Freistadt im Zentrum von Kopenhagen.

Inspiriert von Esperanto, der an keine Nation gebundene Sprache, die gleiche Rechte für alle beim Gebrauch garantiert, erforscht Giulia Bruno in ihrer Arbeit eines der vielversprechendsten linguistischen Experimente des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Für das Projekt werden Film, Fotographie, Dokumentation und Interview kombiniert und so die Verbindungen zwischen Sprache, Nation, Identität, Globalisierung und Wirtschaft dargestellt. Gedreht in Jamaica, den USA, Indonesien, Europa, Brasilien und Südkorea, untersucht der Film die Rolle der “Lingua franca”, einer artifiziellen Vermittlungssprache. Insbesondere werden Diskurse und Praktiken untersucht, die mit dem Gebrauch und der Anwendung von Esperanto zusammenhängen. Themen wie dem Wunsch nach Internationalität oder Staatenbildung, der Förderung wirtschaftlicher und kultureller Interessen, dem Überwinden sozialer Begrenzungen und geopolitischer Grenzen wird hierbei nachgegangen.

To Live Outside the Law You Must be Honest ist Teil einer dreikanaligen Videoinstallation, bestehend aus drei inszenierten Videoarbeiten, in denen derselbe Schauspieler jeweils eine andere Rolle spielt. Das Hauptvideo wurde in Christiania aufgenommen, einer freien Stadt im Zentrum von Kopenhagen, gegründet in den frühen 1970er-Jahren. Bis heute gibt es dort kein Privateigentum und ein System der Konsensdemokratie ist in Kraft. Vor dem Hintergrund von Interviews mit Bewohnern Christianias setzt sich das Video mit Fragestellungen zu Selbstverwaltung und Selbstüberwachung sowie Themen wie Freiheit und partizipatorischer Demokratie auseinander.

Die Schulfarm Insel Scharfenberg wurde als reformpädagogisches Experiment zur Umsetzung eines radikaldemokratischen Schulkonzeptes in der Weimarer Republik gegründet. In diesem Internat auf einer Insel im Tegeler See führten Lehrer und Schüler offene Debatten in Diskussionsforen und stimmten über alles ab was die Schule betrifft, auch die grundlegendsten Abläufe. Jeder hatte eine Stimme, Lehrer ebenso wie Schüler. Durch die Darstellung der Schule untersucht Die Insel was die Gesellschaft, die Politik und die Schule selbst mit diesem Erbe anfangen konnte – oder eben nicht, im faschistischen Deutschland der 30er, während des 2. Weltkriegs und dann in den 50ern, in 68 oder in den 90ern. Und was können wir heute damit machen?
