No democracy without critique – no critique without culture: where neither (self-) critical voices nor cultural diversity have a say, populists do well. These spaces, where even highly complex world events are rendered either black or white, have become a decisive threat to democratic processes.

The program series GREY ROOM aims to counter black-and-white thinking with a “grey” discursive space: where situations arise that interrupt the everyday and that force us to critically reflect our (pre-) judgments.

By way of an exhibition, a performance, an art-pedagogical workshop, a film series and several discussions, GREY ROOM asks how power and powerlessness shape both individual and community, which group dynamics lead to a critical shaping of public opinion, how individual participation becomes systemically important, and what responsibility is assumed by individuals in this process.

CRITIQUE&CULTURE wants to help lend greater visibility to the cultural potential offered by expats living in Berlin, but hailing from those countries where democratic processes are being undermined by democratic instruments. It is this potential that can be deployed as an early-warning system when the long European tradition of cultural freedom is jeopardized.

Ohne Kritik keine Demokratie – ohne Kultur keine Kritik: wo weder (selbst)kritische Stimmen noch kulturelle Diversität zu Wort kommen, haben Populisten gute Chancen. Diese Räume, wo auch hochkomplexe Weltgeschehen entweder schwarz oder weiß werden, sind zu einer realen Gefahr für demokratische Prozesse geworden.

Die Programmreihe GREY ROOM möchte schwarz-weißen Räumen das „grau“ entgegensetzen: einen Raum bieten, wo Situationen entstehen, die den Alltag unterbrechen und zur kritischen Reflexion unserer (Vor)urteile zwingen.

GREY ROOM fragt in einer Ausstellung, einer Performance, einem kunstpädagogischen Workshop, einer Filmreihe sowie Diskussionsrunden, wie Macht und Machtlosigkeit das Individuum und die Gemeinschaft prägen, welche gruppendynamische Prozesse zu einer kritischen Meinungsbildung führen, wie die individuelle Partizipation systemrelevant wird und welche Verantwortung der Einzelne in diesem Prozess trägt.

Critique&Culture will dazu beitragen, dass das kulturelle Potenzial, die in Berlin von Expats aus diesen Ländern, wo demokratische Prozesse teilweise mit demokratischen Instrumenten ausgehebelt werden, genutzt werden kann. Denn es ist dieses Potenzial, das als Frühwarnsystem funktioniert, wenn es darum geht, dass eine lange europäische Tradition der kulturellen Freiheit in Gefahr gerät.
